TALKS // Conversations at Clerkenwell : Wellbeing in the workplace

A hot topic this week - improving workplace environments through business strategy, design and products created with the intention of enhancing our wellbeing at work .

We listened to On Office editor Jessica-Christin Hametner, chairing a fascinating talk with speakers
Jenny Jones,  Aki Soudunsaari and Neil Tomkinson to discuss how adaptable lighting, choice of colour, better air quality, nature and greenery and localised/personalised customisation can contribute to our emotional and physical states at work. The conclusion: create interiors that look after all of our senses for a happier and healthier work-life balance.

We interviewed Carrie Maxwell, part of the Once Upon A Time project. The result of a collaboration between Clerkenwell Design Week students from the Chelsea College of Arts illustrating historical tales of Clerkenwell.

What were your inspirations?

My initial idea for this project was to get to know the meat market first. So after research about Smithfield Market’s history, as well as visiting the market during opening hours (Mon-Fri, 2am-8am). The workers and shoppers of Smithfield really inspired me! It would not be a market without the workers and shoppers. So, I decided to documents and celebrate worker’s hands from Smithfield Market.

Your top 3 street arts in London?

Let it go/ angry Stik by Stik on Grimsby Street. It is a great spot to capture wild Instagram poser on a Sunday on an off street of brick lane as well a Pokemon go gym, very entertaining spot!

To be honest, Grimsby Street is probably my favourite spot to check out street art whenever I’m visiting Brick Lane Sunday Market. It is a good retreat from the busy Market!

Big fan of Cityzenkane’s work! You can always spot his work around London from small to large scale!

3 questions to Mary Castel, founder of Maison Fragile.

How do you say “porcelaine” in English? What are the differences with French porcelaine ?

Firstly, we owe the invention of fine porcelain to the English, what we call “bone china”. It’s a mix of stone, kaolin clay and bovine bones... It’s incredible .

Secondly, the English are sort of obsessed with Tea Time, it’s a real passion! So they really cherish this moment with their teapot, cup and saucer. We call this “Shabby chic”, the mix of little flowers that are a bit “granny-style” but incredibly charming.

There are magnificent companies with incredible know how, I’m a real fan of Wedgewood, for their beautiful colour work on biscuit and for the delicate forms.

So far your collections focus on French characters  - Chers Parisiens-  who will be on the Dear Londoners list?

Elton John, Mick Jagger, Churchill and Princess Diana, obviously!

Are you team Kate or team Meghan?

Meghan is alternative and cool, she brings some real free spirit and open mindedness to the Royal Family, just like Diana did :-)

Welcome Archie ;)

I can't wait to buy a mug with his face on it! Which reminds me, the English also invented the portraits of the Royal family on collectable mugs and plates. They’re not always of the best quality, but it’s fun.

Once Upon A Time is the result of a collaboration between Clerkenwell Design Week students from the Chelsea College of Arts illustrating historical tales of Clerkenwell. For the 10th edition of CDW, we met with one of the students selected to exhibit their work in Clerkenwell.

4 questions to Alistair Ramage, student at Chelsea College of Art.

Your location was St James Church. What were your inspirations?

The church itself is beautiful inside and out, I spent couple of days in and around the church looking at the history, architecture and design. The inspiration came from the geometric stained-glass windows and a board that lists the names of 66 Martyr’s.

Is there a logic between them or are they independent from each other?

Each graphic is representative of that specific area, but they all communicate a historical aspect of Clerkenwell.

Should we follow a path?

Each graphic is located near the main festival locations. There is a guided tour by Lansdown London that will go past all the graphics!

Your top 3 street arts in London?

Anywhere around Brixton Arches. A wall behind the Phoenix Garden which has a 10ft tall graphic and the work at South Bank Skatepark.

We interviewed Paul Stamper, Lead Designer at Renault and visiting CDW2019.

Why are you visiting Clerkenwell Design Week?

To get inspired, discover and find new products and trends.

How would you describe CDW in 3 words?

Friendly. Inspiring. Diverse.

How is it interesting for a car manufacturer?

To source new suppliers, ideas, and to make contacts for future projects, such as concept cars, future mobility.

How is design perceived within the car industry?

In the design department, Industrial design has always taken first priority, but we know how important it is to look at what our clients are looking at. And product design is one of the main resources. At Renault design is one of the key selling points for a car, how it looks to the client.

What is the top design trend for a car?

There is no one top trend, there are many trends elements to make up a car as a good design, first impressions, first contact, it’s shape, it’s lines, it’s colours, comfort, materials, the emotional experience. All of these come from trends but not on defines it.

Any crush on a product or a brand at Clerkenwell?

Too early to say. Will tell you later. Maybe. Just enjoying the atmosphere for the moment.

Our trendspotters on the ground

Max Fraser, Nicolas Roope and Cédric Martineaud.

The ones to watch…
